This book provides the teacher and student with a wide variety of suitable material for essay work and letter writing, together with simple instructions on how to go about it. The subject-matter is so arranged that the students will be able to work systematically at the writing of English over a long period. The teacher, too, will have at his disposal a great number of exercises and topics so that he can keep a close check on the written work of his pupils. The first chapter presupposes that the student has covered the main difficulties in elementary grammar and has acquired a limited active vocabulary, without actually having had any experience in expressing himself in continuing prose. Two to three years should be spent on Part I which brings the student up to the level of the English Language paper of the Cambridge Lower Certificate in English Examination. A further two years should be devoted to Part II which goes well beyond the requirements of the Cambridge Proficiency in English Examination and should be found suitable for students doing advanced work in the writing of English as a foreign language.
Aldous Huxley, author of eleven novels, remains one of the towering figures of the twentieth century, his work resistant to passing fads in literature. This critical biography explores Huxley's life-long quest for self-actualization by interfacing the events of his life with details of the creative period that produced each book. The text weaves Huxley's letters, essays and interviews with the thematic content of each novel, providing a unique look into the man's life and work. Of utmost importance is the depiction of an individual striving for the intellectual growth that would yield a sound philosophical and spiritual view of life, one he infused into his work.
Description

The German Pronunciation Dictionary is the new authoritative reference work for German Standard Pronunciation. It provides reliable information regarding the standard forms used by most native speakers of German today. The inventory comprises some 150,000 headwords and is complemented by numerous informative text boxes explaining underlying phonetic rules and characteristics of German pronunciation; the work is prefaced by an introduction giving detailed accounts of the vocabulary covered, of phonetic fundamentals and rules of pronunciation, and of stylistic phonetic variation. In addition, the hardcover version is accompanied by an audio CD with spoken examples of the phenomena described.

From the preface:

in verschiedenen öffentlichen Kommunikationsbereichen.

The narrator is a young governess, sent off to a country house to take charge of two orphaned children. She finds a pleasant house and a comfortable housekeeper, while the children are beautiful and charming. But she soon begins to feel the presence of intense evil.

About the Author
Henry James was born in 1843 in Washington Place, New York, of Scottish and Irish ancestry. His father was a prominent theologian and philosopher and his elder brother, William, is also famous as a philosopher. He attended schools in New York and later in London, Paris and Geneva, entering the Law School at Harvard in 1862. In 1865 he began to contribute reviews and short stories to American journals. In 1875, after two prior visits to Europe, he settled for a year in Paris, where he met Flaubert, Turgenev and other literary figures. However, the next year he moved to London, where he became so popular in society that in the winter of 1878–9 he confessed to accepting 107 invitations. In 1898 he left London and went to live at Lamb House, Rye, Sussex. Henry James became a naturalized citizen in 1915, was awarded the Order of Merit and died in 1916.
Elmer H. Antonsen, Elements of German: Phonology and Morphology
The University of Alabama Press | 2007 | ISBN: 0817354506 | Pages: 161 | PDF | 5MB

Elements of German fills a gap in advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate levels of German language study by presenting more advanced concepts of the language in a light intended for practical use rather than theoretical discourse. This text provides a means to improve knowledge and command of grammatically correct German as it is spoken and written. It also introduces methods and tools of linguistic analysis in the areas of phonology and morphology. Unlike books that treat phonology in a cursory way, this text delves into the problems of word formation and the intricacies of inflection and derivation. Exercises are included throughout to help better absorb the rules for real-world language use. This volume provides an in-depth look at the German language from the ground up. Its detailed approach makes this book an excellent complement to the work of less specific grammar textbooks and reviews.

Hi everybody;

I have found a very interesting & useful application for any typist, for raising his/her productivity. 'Accents' is a very tiny software running in the background, and its effect appears only when you are typing in a text field, and you want to enter an accented letter such as ö, è or î. Accually for entering these 3 sample letters I used 'Accents' :)

For reaching a desired accented letter, hit the related key continuously. For example for ÿ, hit y three times. While doing so, a tool tip appears above the letter, in which all available accented varieties of it are shown, and at the same time your typed letter will be changed to a new one. That's it, it's a piece of cake.

There is also a file called 'Accents.ini' by which you can change the delay, or the order of the letters. For those who dont know how: simply open it by a text editor, such as Notepad. Edit the entries, and be warned to not delete or add irrelevant data. Save it.

Enjoy :)
John Flowerdew, Second Language Listening: Theory and Practice (Cambridge Language Education)
Cambridge University Press (February 7, 2005) | ISBN: 0521781353 | Pages: 238 | PDF | 1,7MB

As an essential part of communicative competence, listening is a skill which deserves equal treatment with the other basic skills of speaking, reading, and writing. Second Language Listening combines up-to-date listening theory with case studies of actual pedagogical practice. The authors describe current models of listening theory and exemplify each with a textbook task. They address the role of technology in teaching listening, questioning techniques, and testing. Second Language Listening is designed to be used with both pre-service and in-service teachers who are involved in the teaching of listening or the design of pedagogic materials for listening.
